Built in Mariposa, for Mariposa

Frost Shop Marketplace is an open-air market on Highway 140 — the scenic route to Yosemite National Park. We host local makers, growers, cooks, and artists Friday through Monday from Memorial Day weekend through Halloween, every year.

The story of this corner

From the Frost Shop, to the dirt lot, to the marketplace

If you grew up in Mariposa, you remember the Frost Shop — the drive-in ice cream stop at Highway 140 and 9th, neon sign glowing over the road, cooling off generations of locals and Yosemite travelers. In 2005 it was bulldozed, and for the next twenty years the corner sat empty. The town called it what it had become: the dirt lot.

But Mariposa's name means butterfly — and every butterfly starts as something humbler. Frost Shop Marketplace took its name from that beloved drive-in on purpose. The corner that fed this town ice cream for decades is feeding it again: local makers, growers, chefs, and food trucks, four days a week. Same corner. New wings.

Help us tell it properly: if you have photos of the original Frost Shop — the building, the sign, your family at the window — or memories worth keeping, send them to sponsors@frostshopmarketplace.com. We're building a permanent history display at the marketplace, and this story belongs to the whole town.

From the founder

Two years of work to build this

I'm Xav Dubois. I started Frost Shop Marketplace because Mariposa needed a real place for its makers and artists, its growers, its chefs of every tradition — cottage cooks to food trucks — its wine, beer, and mead makers, its local nonprofits and small businesses, to sell and be seen. Not just by each other, but by the millions of people streaming up Highway 140 to Yosemite every season.

Everyone in Mariposa knows this corner of Highway 140 and 9th. For twenty-some years it was “the dirt lot” — a place you drove past. For the last two, I worked on the County permits, the lease, the site plan, the build, the marketing — most of it in public, all of it without a paycheck. Frost Shop Marketplace operates as a nonprofit program under the fiscal sponsorship of the Collaborative Arts and Culture Foundation (CACF): booth fees go back into the marketplace, and the dollars you spend here stay with local producers.

I'm an entrepreneur by trade — I run a software company, and my team built the software that runs The Lot: vendor onboarding, booth booking, the live site map. It's our contribution to Mariposa and the amazing people who live here. Because here's what I've learned: economies aren't built by money alone. They're built by people showing up for each other. A rancher's beef becomes the taco special two booths down. A neighbor lends a truck on setup day. A first-time vendor sells out by noon because the whole town talked. That's the power of community, and it's the real engine under Frost Shop Marketplace.

It's also why I run Ignite Space, Mariposa's coworking and entrepreneurial center, just down the street above Subway. Frost Shop Marketplace is where Mariposa sells; Ignite Space is where Mariposa builds. If you've got an idea brewing — or just need fast internet and a good chair for the day — come say hi: Mariposa.IgniteSpace.co.

If you're a vendor here, I'm your founder and operator. If you're a visitor, welcome — locals call this place The Lot (it used to come with another word in front), and what you spend here stays in Mariposa.

Why we exist

Mariposa is small. Local makers, farmers, and food vendors often have nowhere consistent to sell. Tourists pass through Hwy 140 to Yosemite without ever meeting the people who actually live and create here.

Frost Shop is the missing market — a weekly home for Mariposa's producers, and a doorway for visitors to spend money locally instead of leaving it in the park.

Who runs it

Founded by Xavier Dubois (Ignite Space, Inc.). Frost Shop Marketplace operates as a nonprofit program under the fiscal sponsorship of the Collaborative Arts and Culture Foundation (CACF) — a 501(c)(3) public charity — so vendor fees stay anchored in community reinvestment, not extractive profit.

On the ground: a lean team of one founder plus volunteers and vendor-leaders. Every dollar is accounted for and most decisions are made in public on this site.

Where we are

5087 & 5091 Highway 140, Mariposa, CA 95338. Two adjacent parcels combined under one ground lease, operating under Mariposa County CUP 2011-101.

Restrooms, water, parking, shade structures, and the food vendor corridor are all on-site. Highway 140 frontage with drive-by visibility from both directions.

The way we operate

  • Local first. Mariposa County producers get priority. Visitors are welcome but the marketplace exists for neighbors.
  • Vendor-friendly pricing. Tiered fees, locked in advance, with a season-pass option that skips special-event surcharges. Renewals get an early-bird discount.
  • Compliance done for you. We carry the organizer's permits with Mariposa County Environmental Health; vendors just need their own insurance and applicable permits.
  • Open books. Under the CACF fiscal sponsorship model, financials are reported to the nonprofit operator and kept available for vendor review.
  • Built to last. We invest in shade, signage, infrastructure, and marketing each season — not seasonal pop-up kit that walks away in November.
