Situated amidst granite domes and peaks, Tenaya Lake is the largest lake in Yosemite's frontcountry. Tenaya Lake is one of the most popular summer destinations for picnicking, swimming, and kayaking. There are several parking areas along the lake for beach access, picnic tables, and scenic views. Vault toilets are available at some parking areas. Tenaya Lake was named after Chief Tenaya, an American Indian tribal leader living in Yosemite Valley at the time of invasion by the Mariposa Battalion. Non-motorized watercraft such as paddleboards, kayaks, and canoes are permitted on the lake. Every person must have a personal flotation device immediately available for each occupant of the watercraft. Children under age 13 must be wearing a personal flotation device. Seasonal Information Tenaya Lake is only reachable by vehicle when Tioga Road is open, typically late May or early June to sometime in October or November. Accessibility The east end of Tenaya Lake has designated accessible parking spaces, an accessible vault toilet, and an accessible, paved path that leads to open views of Tenaya Lake.
