Visit the Wilderness Center at Big Oak Flat Information Station to learn about wilderness safety, pick up wilderness permits and maps, and rent bear canisters. Wilderness permits are required year-round for any overnight stay in the Yosemite Wilderness. Permits are not required for day hikes (except if hiking to Half Dome). Wilderness permits are only issued to a limited number of people for each trailhead in order to provide outstanding opportunities for solitude, as required by the Wilderness Act. Before planning a wilderness trip during this time, please ensure you're prepared for winter conditions . Operating Hours & Seasons 8 am to 5 pm daily. The Wilderness Center at Big Oak Flat Information Center is closed seasonally from approximately mid October through late May. During this time, self-registration wilderness permits are available from outside the nearest permit station to each trailhead. Accessibility Designated accessible parking spaces are available in front of the facility. The Information Station has an accessible information desk, campground reservation desk, wilderness center, and restrooms. New accessible exhibits are located inside the facility and on the deck.
